Ferencavros will play host to Olympiacos in the second leg of their UEFA Europa Conference League knockout round playoff tie at Groupama Arena on Thursday night. The first leg in Greece last week ended 1-0 in favour of Red-Whites thanks to Ayoub El-Kaabi’s effort seven minutes from time. Should the visitors avoid defeat in Budapest, they will seal their place in the last-16 stage of a European competition for the first time since the 2020-21 Europa League.
Ferencvaros looked set of hold the Greek giants to a goalless draw for a vast majority of the first leg, but El-Kaabi’s 83rd-minute effort handed the NB I side their first competitive defeat since the 3-2 league-loss away to Paks on December 10 last year. If Dejan Stankovic’s side can overturn a one goal deficit in front of their own supporters, it would represent the Green and Whites’ first victory in a two-legged tie in the main draw of a UEFA competitions since the 2003-04 season. On the domestic front, the Green Eagles are currently occupying second spot in the Hungarian top flight standings, having collected 42 points from 20 games, just a solitary point adrift of leaders Paksi FC, who have played a game more.
Olympiacos, on the other hand, are heading into the match on the back of three successive wins under new boss Jose Luis Mendilibar, who took charge of the team earlier this month. After the narrow victory over Ferencvaros, Thrylos claimed a comprehensive 4-1 victory over PAOK in Sunday’s Greek Super League encounter at Stadio Toumbas. Mendilibar’s men opened the scoring through Fran Navarro’s 29th-minute effort before Kiril Despodov leveled the score for PAOK six minutes before the break. After the restart, Thyrols came out all guns blazing, finding the back of the net three times, thanks to Daniel Podence’s 54th-minute strike and El Kaabi’s late double. The Spanish tactician’s next big task would be to help his side perform on their travels in Europe, as they lost their last two continental fixtures on the road.
